Itinerary (7 days)

Arrival in Milano Malpensa. Transfer by private bus to Santo Stefano Belbo in Piedmont and accommodation in the beautiful Relais San Maurizio (or similar). Free time to relax in the SPA or strolling through the amazing vineyards surrounding the relais. Dinner and overnight in Relais.

Breakfast in resort.
Morning: transfer to Nizza Monferrato and visit of the Bersano wine cellars and old farm tools museum, displaying a collection of top quality wines, including Barbera d’Asti D.O.C.G. and Barbera del Monferrato d.o.c.g.. Transfer to the nearby village of Canelli, home to the Asti D.O.C.G., the best-selling Italian wine abroad. This wine is made with sweet Moscato grapes and with the champenois method, the same used in the production of Champagne in France, that has been adapted to this sweet wine.

Visit to one of the historic cellars, called “Underground Cathedrals”, which have been named UNESCO World Heritage Site. Some of these particular cellars reach the depth of 32 m in the subsoil, dug in the “marna” (marl), others have seen the birth of the first Italian sparkling wine in 1865! Lunch at “Ristorante Enoteca di Canelli”.

Afternoon: first session of your first Piedmontese Cookery Course: an award-winning chef will show you all the secrets of the most renowned Piedmontese and Italian dishes. Lesson ends with a top quality dinner made by yourself with the chef supervision.
Transfer to Santo Stefano Belbo and overnight in Relais.

Breakfast in resort.
Morning: Pick-up of guests and transfer to Montà through a panoramic tour of the Roero Hills. Arrival and meeting with an experienced local ‘trifolao’ (truffle hunter in Piedmontese dialect). Truffle hunting excursion in the wood with the trifolao and his trusty dog, with thorough expatiation on the truffle topic (in-depth analysis on the truffle subject: what it is, life cycle, the varieties, truffle plants, truffle hunt, history and myth, the dog, harvest calendar and marketing).

Final aperitif at the trifolao’s restored stone hut in the middle of the wood (assortment of snacks and truffle-based products, drinks included). Thematic lunch with the truffle hunter (from mid-September till the end of January white truffle available with a supplement of 50 € pp).

Afternoon: Transfer to Santo Stefano Belbo, free time to relax.
Second Piedmontese Cookery Course in the Bistrot and dinner. Overnight in Relais.

Breakfast in resort.
Morning: you will explore the Langhe area, a part of Piedmont that may be considered the food and wine district along with Monferrato and Roero, UNESCO heritage. First stop at Barbaresco, giving its name to one of the best red D.O.C.G. wine, nicknamed “The wine of queens” according to an old saying. Here you will visit and have a taste at the renowned Marquis of Gresy wine cellars. Trip goes on to Barolo, home to the worldwide famous Barolo D.O.C.G., also nicknamed “Wine of the kings”. Visit at a local wine maker premises, followed by a Piedmontese typical lunch accompanied by a taste of different kinds of Barolo d.o.c.g. and other wines of this area.

Afternoon: transfer to Neive and guided tour of the historic centre, which preserves a medieval layout, made of cobbled streets that rise towards the Clock Tower and elegant terracotta buildings. It has been included in the club of “The Most Beautiful Villages of Italy”, created by the Tourism Council of the Association of Italian Municipalities. From the top of the village there is a wide view of the surrounding hills cultivated with vines: it is a production area for great wines D.O.C and D.O.C.G.
Transfer to Santo Stefano Belbo, dinner and overnight in Relais.

Breakfast in resort.
Morning: Transfer to Grinzane Cavour, where you will visit its castle hosting the Enoteca Regionale Piemontese Cavour (Cavour Piedmontese regional cellar) and Langhe Museum. The castle is also home to a famous international literary award held here once a year, named Grinzane Cavour Prize.
Transfer to Fontanafredda. Visit to the historic winery and to the estate. Fontanafredda is an expanse of vineyards of over one hundred hectares, located in the heart of the Langhe hills. We are in the places where the protagonists of the Unity of Italy acted and, at the same time, of its most noble wine making tradition.

It is a precious oasis, unique in the world, a nineteenth-century village, above all, a technologically avant-garde wine company, with historic cellars where the great red wines are refined. Lunch in a restaurant.

Afternoon: transfer to Pollenzo, an important Roman city and later a Royal Estate of the Savoy family. In the late Nineties, a project was launched to restore the large Agency complex, where today you can find the University of Gastronomic Sciences, the Wine Bank, the Hotel of the Agency with the Restaurant. The complex of Pollenzo is a site registered as a UNESCO World Heritage “Savoy Residences”.

Transfer to Bra. Guided tour of the historic centre. Bra is the city of Cheese, Bra Sausage and Slow Food. A magical place between Langhe and Roero, Bra is one of the major centres of Piedmontese Baroque.
Transfer to Santo Stefano Belbo; dinner and overnight in Relais.

Breakfast in hotel.
Morning: transfer to Mombaruzzo, a Piedmontese little town immersed in greenery that offers unique aromas and flavors. The pleasant sweet-bitter notes of its traditional macaroons “Amaretti” combine with the inebriating taste of its wines and grappas that testify to the deep-rooted wine-making vocation of this area of the region.
The historic Pasticceria di Moriondo Carlo produces them following the traditional recipe. Time to buy Amaretti.
Transfer to Berta Distillery. The modern state-of-the-art Roccanivo distillery owned by the Berta family at Casalotto di Mombaruzzo opened in the grape harvest of 2002, a historic vintage for this family/business and for the economic development of the Asti wine sector.

The Berta house honours the ancient and valuable culture of hospitality, in keeping with the spirit of union and collaboration with all who work in the area. Elegant, refined, nostalgic, the grappas of today, the final result of a culture that evolved from a solid tradition, but is driven by the pursuit of the qualification of good food and grappa.
Small tasting of distillates and amaretti.
Lunch in restaurant.

Afternoon: transfer to Roccaverano, the “highest” little town in the entire province. This is the land of choice for the Roccaverano Robiola, a Slow Food Presidium, produced with only goat’s milk: the only historic goat in Italy and the only one worthy of comparison with the famous chèvres beyond the Alps. The origins of the Robiola di Roccaverano date back to the Celts, who began to produce a cheese very similar to the current one.
The visit can only include tasting of the organic robiola of one of the local producers.
Transfer to Santo Stefano Belbo, dinner and overnight in Relais.
