Friuli Venezia Giulia Giulia offers many experiences. Bays set among the rocks and golden sand beaches, peaks pierce the clouds and whisper to their visitors a new conception of life. Friuli Venezia Giulia has been a borderland, a bridge towards the unknown of ancient empires. The history of man is concentrated in this small region. Art treasures preserved in a casket that will open before those who ask themselves questions, because they are looking for answers on the history of mankind. Friuli Venezia Giulia’s cooking is its extreme variety: world famous cold cuts, fresh and aged cheeses, first courses in which new sensations are experienced and seafood.
1st day: Aquileia/Gradisca d’Isonzo
Arrival in Aquileia. Free lunch. Visit the National Archaeological Museum and the Basilica. The itinerary consists of a historical-artistic interpretation that embraces 17 centuries of history, without neglecting the Christian message that finds its highest expression in the extraordinary and unique early Christian era mosaic floor. Transfer to Gradisca and accommodation in Hotel Franz. Dinner and overnight.
2nd day: Gradisca/Cividale del Friuli/Gradisca (Km. 150-94 mi)
Breakfast and transfer to Udine, a town with Venetian charm squares and ancient buildings: from Piazza Libertà, called “the most beautiful Venetian square on the mainland”, to Piazza Matteotti (or delle Erbe), which, all surrounded by porches, looks like an open sky living room. Overlooking the town, in a panoramic position, stands the Castle. Giambattista Tiepolo was born here in the eighteenth century: his works can be admired in the Patriarchal Palace, in the Cathedral, in the Church of Purity. Lunch in restaurant. In the afternoon, visit of Cividale del Friuli, a meeting point of cultures and peoples: from the Celts to the Romans, from the Carolingians to the Patriarchate of Aquileia, whose Longobards route is recognized by UNESCO as World Heritage. Julius Caesar founded it around 50 BC as Iulii Forum: hence the current name Friuli. Among the most important monuments we mention the Longobard Temple, one of the most important Western high-medieval architecture. The Altar of Ratchis and the Baptistery of Callisto are exceptional testimonies of the Longobards. Return to Gradisca for dinner and overnight.
3th day: Gradisca/Trieste/Gradisca (Km 200-125 mi)
Breakfast. Full day excursion dedicated to Trieste, multicultural and multi-religious city, famous for its coffee. Visit to the Miramare Park and Castle, described by Giosuè Carducci in his famous poem “Miramar” which describes the tragic fate of Maximilian of Hapsburg. Lunch in restaurant during excursion. In the afternoon, sightseeing tour of the old town, one of the largest pedestrian zones in Europe, following footsteps of the great literary figures of the twentieth century (Svevo, Joyce, Saba, etc.). Break in historic café to taste the famous “Capo in B” (coffee with milk served in glass cup). Dinner at Lokanda Devetak in San Michele del Carso, where the owner, Avgustin Devetak will welcome you in an environment that is a perfect mix of history, tradition and modernity. The menu, consisting of local products, is accompanied by wines personally selected by Mr. Avgustin, a wine experts. Return to the hotel in Gradisca and overnight.
4th day: Gradisca/Redipuglia/Gorizia/San Floriano/Gradisca (Km 150-94 mi)
Breakfast. Full day dedicated to the memory of the tragic warfare of the First World War. It will start from the Redipuglia Memorial to Castelvecchio estate where was the command of the Third Italian Army called “The Unconquered”. Lunch in restaurant with typical menu in Marcottini Doberdò del Lago, close to the “Dolina dei Bersaglieri”. Afternoon drive to Gorizia, a city with Central European atmosphere. Piazza Transalpina where you can walk with one foot in Italy and one in Slovenia. The city attractions are: The medieval castle with its charming village, several historic buildings (Palazzo della Torre, Palazzo Attems Petzenstein and Palazzo Werdenberg – Isontina State Library), beautiful parks such as Parco Piuma on the river Isonzo, the Palazzo Coronini Cronberg (with trees from all over the world) and the Viatori Park. You may see the Museum of Fashion and Applied Arts, the Museum of the Great War and the Archaeological Collection. After the tour, passing by the Ossuary of Oslavia, which collects remains of Italian and the Austro-Hungarian soldiers, you reach the village of Gradisciutta where, in Robert Princic cellar, you will taste the famous wines of Collio. Dinner at Korsic restaurant in San Floriano del Collio. Return to Gradisca for overnight.
5th day: Gradisca/Palmanova
Breakfast. Short visit of city-fortress of Palmanova, Venetian military architecture masterpiece, a fortress town designed and built to defend the regional borders from foreign threats, especially by Turkish ones. This is a unique model city in its kind, shaped like a nine-pointed star, with a central square. End of our services.
