A poetry of senses, the exaltation of taste.
A world heritage tour. Unique in the world. Unforgettable. Indelible.

Modern Wine Routes are territorial entities which are responsible for food and wine tours management. From their creation, they have always been called “Wine Routes”, but there have actually been many designations, due both to the different local needs and to the critical attitude shown by the Slow Food association about limiting the activities to wines only. That said, in Italy there are many different types of itineraries: Wine Routes, Flavours Routes, Wine&Oil Routes, Wine&Food Routes; which are distributed in all Italian Regions. These Routes are characterised by different developing activities and initiatives, but they all have a common goal, which is also the project leading thread: valuing the land and its products.
In Piemonte there are 6 active and recognized Routes. Our proposal is to experience just a few of them, in order to really enjoy Piemonte traditions.

LANGA AND BAROLO
The “Barolo and Langa Great Wines Route” association was founded in 2006 with the purpose of enhancing, promoting and energizing the territory where the valuable wines of Langa are produced. Here, centuries-old traditions take their roots and are joined by culture and characteristic wine&food (products for which this area has become renowned all over the World). The Route gathers many municipalities in an extraordinary journey into the very heart and soul of the territory, where the main character is, indeed, the Wine. But in the background reigns the great patrimony of culture and tradition, the exuberance of nature with its enchanting hills and vineyards.

ASTESANA
Astesana is the historical name of an area that is highly specialized in wines, sparkling wines and grappa production. It has a strong culinary tradition that has built a real Asti Food&Wine school. Going South from Asti, you will reach the Astesana area, a very ancient land with dozens of castles that prove the presence, in the past, of many capital cities and prestigious families in the area. The Barbera and the aromatic Moscato and Brachetto wines are the kings of this land. These hills are the birthplace of the Italian sparkling wine (born in Canelli 200 years ago), extraordinary grappa and the unique Italian DOC goat cheese Robiola are produced here and, last but not least, we can’t forget the most perfumed truffles in Piemonte.

MONFERRATO ASTIGIANO
The Monferrato Astigiano area offers a truly unique experience: “Descending down the hills”. Its valleys are lower than the Po Pianalto surrounding Turin. This phenomenon can be explained by the geological events that generated the Monferrato area. In ancient times, this area was submerged by the sea; later, during the quaternary glacial time, the Po Valley began to emerge. At this stage numerous streams coming from alpine glaciers began to erode the land, digging deep valleys and reshaping the entire Astigiano landscape as it is today.

Itinerary (7 days)

DAY 1 – MILANO MALPENSA/SERRALUNGA D’ALBA (190 Km – 118 miles)
Arrival in Milano Malpensa. Transfer to Serralunga d’Alba by private bus and accommodation in the beautiful Boscareto Resort (or similar). Free time to relax in the Wellness SPA or strolling through the amazing vineyards surrounding the relais.

DAY 2 – SERRALUNGA D’ALBA/FONTANAFREDDA/GRINZANE CAVOUR/ALBA/
SERRALUNGA D’ALBA (30 Km – 18 miles)
Breakfast in resort.
Morning: Transfer to Fontanafredda; visit to the historic winery and to the Estate. Fontanafredda is an expanse of vineyards of over one hundred hectares, located among Serralunga d’Alba, Barolo and Diano d’Alba, in the heart of the Langhe hills. They are the places where the protagonists of the Unity of Italy acted and, at the same time, of its most noble wine making tradition. It is a precious oasis, unique in the world, a nineteenth-century village, above all a technologically avant-garde wine company, with historic cellars where the great red wines of the Langhe are refined. The buildings, with their typical brown and ocher colors in alternating bands, are the splendid setting for the small church, the famous Villa of the “Bela Rosin” and the “Swan Lake” which collects waters from the nearby “cold fountain”, the spring that gives the name to the Estate.
Lunch in restaurant.

Afternoon: tour of some villages on the hills where the famous Barolo wine is produced. Arrival in Grinzane Cavour, with its wonderful Medieval Castle (UNESCO site) and houses, the Regional Wine Cellar, the Ethnographic Museum and the Langa Museum. Wine tasting in the Regional Wine Cellar.
Transfer to Alba, a city known for its White Truffle International Fear. The Dome has been rebuilt in Gothic style; not far away, the Church of San Giovanni Battista hosts works of art from the fourteenth century. The Federico Eusebio Museum presents artifacts from Prehistory to the Roman era, as well as a section dedicated to natural history.

Dinner at “Piazza Duomo” Restaurant by Chef Enrico Crippa (3 Michelin stars). The restaurant is located nearby the ancient town of Alba, closed to its Dome.

Visit to one of the historic cellars, renamed “Underground Cathedrals”, which have been declared UNESCO World Heritage Site; wine tasting. Some of these particular cellars reach the depth of 32 m in the subsoil, dug in the “marna” (marl), others have seen the birth of the first Italian sparkling wine in 1865!

Transfer to the beautiful Relais Sant’Uffizio (or similar) nearby Asti. Dinner and overnight in resort.
Guide tour: full day

DAY 5 – ASTI/ROCCAVERANO/ASTI (100 Km – 62 miles)
Breakfast in Relais.
Morning: transfer to Roccaverano, the “highest” little town in the entire province. This is the land of choice for the Roccaverano Robiola, a Slow Food Presidium, produced with only goat’s milk: the only historic goat in Italy and the only one worthy of comparison with the famous chèvres beyond the Alps. The origins of the Robiola di Roccaverano date back to the Celts, who began to produce a cheese very similar to the current one. The visit can only include tasting of the organic robiola of one of the local producers. Light lunch in restaurant

Afternoon: transfer to Asti; it is known throughout the world for its wines, in particular Asti Spumante: every year, in September, one of the most important wine competitions in Italy, called the Douja d’Or, is held there. Visit to Battistero di San Pietro; the Baptistery, also called “La Rotonda”, was built on the remains of a small Roman temple; the Cloister and part of the Priory housed the Knights of St. John of Jerusalem, who later became Order Knights of Rhodes and finally Order Knights of Malta.
Dinner in restaurant. Overnight in Resort.
Guide tour: full day

DAY 6 – ASTI/MOMBARUZZO/NIZZA MONFERRATO/ASTI (85 Km – 52 miles)
Breakfast in Resort.
Morning: transfer to Mombaruzzo; Mombaruzzo is a Piedmontese municipality immersed in greenery that offers unique aromas and flavors. The pleasant sweet-bitter notes of its traditional macaroons “Amaretti” combine with the inebriating taste of its wines and grappas that testify to the deep-rooted wine-making vocation of this area of the region.
The historic Pasticceria di Moriondo Carlo produces them following the traditional recipe. Time to buy Amaretti.

Transfer to Berta Distillery. The modern state-of-the-art Roccanivo distillery owned by the Berta family at Casalotto di Mombaruzzo opened in the grape harvest of 2002, a historic vintage for this family/business and for the economic development of the Asti wine sector.
The Berta house honours the ancient and valuable culture of hospitality, in keeping with the spirit of union and collaboration with all who work in the area.
